Agenda Item: VIII.D.

Consider/Approve Director's Participation in CEO Professional Development Program

Preliminary Matters:

Annually, the Board must approve its Director’s participation in the State’s Executive Development Program for Public School Leaders, Component III – CEO Leadership Institutes. This program consists of ten (10) days of meetings each fiscal year for which the State usually pays the Director a $1,000 supplement ($100 per meeting). Due to the additional State budget cuts, I am not sure of the status of this supplement for the 2009 – 2010 Fiscal Year. Regardless of the status, no financial obligation will attach to the Board’s approval of my participation in this professional development program.

The latest information I have regarding this program is that the State has contracted with T.O.S.S. (Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents) to provide the training. T.O.S.S. will include a $700 non-mandatory fee on their dues billing to cover the costs of rooms and meals associated with this program.  The Board reimburses the costs of meals and rooms associated with professional development; therefore, the $700 is not an extreme amount.

Staff Recommendation:

Professional development opportunities are extremely important in staying informed on the latest trends and developments in public education. I would appreciate the Board's approval of my participation.
